The Fat Salmon Annual Open Water Swim

The Fat Salmon Open Water Swim is an annual open water swimming event in Seattle, Washington. The course is a point-to-point route that traces the western shoreline of the lake. It is one of the Pacific Northwest’s best-known open water swimming races.

The swim typically covers a distance of approximately 3.2 miles (5.1-ish kilometers) and attracts swimmers of various skill levels, from competitive athletes to recreational enthusiasts. Fun fact: the event’s name, “Fat Salmon,” alludes to the fact that the swim often coincides with the salmon spawning season in the Pacific Northwest.

The swim begins just off the shore from the Day Street Boat Ramp (1402 Lakeside Ave S, Seattle, WA) and concludes at Madison Park Beach, where participants cross timing mats on the shore.

During the summer, water temperatures generally range from 67 to 73 degrees Fahrenheit. However, there can be significant variations, so swimmers should be ready for the possibility of a chilly swim.
