Participants in the Downriver Rip open water swim race, swimming in the middle of the upper james river

Downriver Rip, Midlothian VA

The Downriver Rip is a unique open water swim race that takes place in the fast waters of the Upper James River, in Midlothian, not far from Richmond, Virginia.

There are two Downriver Rip events to choose from – the 4.4 mile river swim, and the 2.5 mile charity swim. The 4.4 mile racers are shuttled to Watkins Landing and start first. The 2.5 mile racers are shuttled by boat to the Rte 288 Bridge and kick off when the other racers have passed by. The finish line is located at Robious landing.

The race is all downstream, and the water is fast moving, making for a speedy, exciting swim. The current can be strong and varies with the level of the water so you are advised to stay up to date with the latest race information via the race facebook page.

Wetsuits are permitted if the temperature is less than 70 degrees – again, keep an eye on the facebook page and other local information.

Parking is limited and participants are encouraged to carpool where possible. There are restrooms but no showers at the park.
