A view between two bridges crossing the Choptank River, the narrow channel is the location of the Maryland Freedom Swim

Maryland Freedom Swim

The Maryland Freedom Swim is a two mile point-to-point open water swim race across the Choptank River in Cambridge, Maryland.

The race is swum in the channel between the two bridges, beside the Frederick C Malkus Jr bridge (Choptank River Bridge) on Route 50, from the Talbot County side to the Sailwinds Park beach access point on the Dorchester County side. Similar to the Long Bridge Swim in Sandpoint, Idaho, is possible for your entourage to follow your progression from the bridge for the entirety of the race, which is great for encouragement and makes for some excellent photos.

The Choptank River is a moving body of water and the race requires navigation through two bridges. Although the race is specially timed to coincide with slack tide, there are tides and currents. Therefore the participation is recommended for experienced open water swimmers only. Racers must produce evidence of experience swimming over a mile – either other race results, or a form signed by a qualified life guard stating that you have swum a mile or more in the pool in an hour or less.

The Maryland Freedom Swim is 2 miles without rest. There are no places to stop along the route. Racers start in waves of 6 participants, leaving the beach every ten seconds. Organizers have a self-seeding system in place to ease congestion. The race starts 30 minutes prior to high tide so that the bulk of the race takes place at slack tide.

A part of the proceeds from the race go to the Shore Rivers Organization, and organization that protects and restores Eastern Shore rivers and waterways.
