Change Your Latitude

Change Your Latitude is an open water swim event held in Sitka, Alaska, and organized by the Baranof Barracuda Swim Club. There are various race options, including solo or relay races spanning 10k (6.2 miles), 6.6k (4.1 miles), and 3.3k (2 miles).

The race start is by the Sitka Sound Science Center, and the course meanders southward along Sitka National Historical Park. The 10k race entails three laps of the course, the 6k involves two “laps,” and the 3k covers a single circuit. You must be 18 years of age to swim the 10k course, and 16 to swim the other distances. There’s also a 1k race suitable for all ages.

The race caps off at a maximum of 100 solo swimmers for the 10k, 6k, and 3k races, along with 10 relay teams, so register early.

Water temperature in the Sitka Sound is usually in the mid to upper 50’s (10-15 Celsius). Wetsuits are highly recommended, and swimmers must provide proof of a continuous one-hour swim in water at or below 60 degrees Fahrenheit or a 2000m/2200y swim time of less than 40 minutes (or a letter from your swim coach attesting to your experience at these temperatures will suffice).
